St. Michael’s Hospital: 24 Hours in the ER

Twenty-four hours in the ER is a documentary shot at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, looking at what happens behind the scenes. In the middle of the night the pace shifts but never really slows. I moved through those quieter, heavier hours, photographing what came through the doors, someone with chest pains that became a heart attack, a patient brought in after a drug overdose who had to be strapped to a bed in case he became violent, and a car accident case arriving VSA, (Viatal Signs Absent) by EMS that ended in death not long after coming into the ER. It’s not about dramatizing any of it, just showing what’s there, the moments people don’t usually see, and the reality of the ER when the rest of the city is asleep.
